On my trip home from the Canadian Rockies I crossed over the United States border near Glacier National Park. From there I went east and entered Northern Montana Reservation country. I came across these ponies that had the most wonderful backdrop but were interested, of course, in eating grass.

The Canadian road trip continues along the Bow Valley which is the main road between Banff and Jasper. The rivers have a green turquoise color up there because of all the glacier melting.

8-23-09 Rodad to Jasper Canada #823

Road to Jasper Canada #823
Oil on linen on quarter inch Baltic birch
Size 7x9
The road to Jasper Canada on Hwy 1 through the heart of the Canadian Rockies is breath taking. Earlier this summer I was painting the Tetons in Wyoming and the Canadian Rockies are ever more striking. They Canadian Rockies seem to tower over you for nearly 200 miles. It is ever so scenic but in some ways hard to paint because the mountains are right up against you. Where ever I had a spot to get some perspective was a good place for a painting.

8-18-09 Canadian Ice Fields #818

Canadian Glacier #818
Size 7x9 inches
Oil on linen on quarter inch Baltic birch
I am in Jasper Canada and have been on the road from Colorado for over a week. I love the road along western Alberta to Jasper. It winds through the backbone of the Canadian Rockies and the glacier fields are wonderful. I painted this piece this morning. Finding cel phone reception much less Internet connection is virtually impossible. I am in the Jasper library doing this blog.

On my trip into Montana I found this afternoon setting with shadows. I painted it as the evening got longer and longer shadows. I love the Beartooth mountains in south Montana above Yellowstone park. I am headed soon for Glacier Park in northern Montana.

I am so intrigued with the Beartooth mountains which lay to the north and west of Yellowstone Park. There are grizzly bear warning signs at all the campgrounds. We have to put our food in special bear lockers or in the car or be fined $150. I didn't see any bears but lots of other four legged critters. I am on my way to Glacier Park in Northern Montana and then on to the Canadian Rockies. If you purchase this painting, I cannot ship to you until I return to Colorado on 8-28-09.

High Country in the Beartooth Mts. #813
Oil on linen on quarter inch Baltic Birch

I am on a month long painting trip to Montana, Canada and back to Colorado. I spent yesterday up in the Beartooth Mts. This area is on the Wyoming, Montana border between Cody Wyoming and Red Lodge Montana. Oh my gosh, I was swarmed by misquotes. To finish this painting I had to rap my head with a dish towel. I had long sleeve shirt and gloves which helped. I did three paintings yesterday. The morning painting and evening painting didn't have the bug problem. The weather yesterday was wonderful. There are no major forest fires so the views are clear and wonderful to behold. If you purchase this painting I will not be able to ship until 8-28-09 when I return to Colorado. I apologize for the poor quality of the immage. My field photoes will have to improve.

8-9-09 High Country in the Rawah #809

High Country in the Rawah #809
Oil on stretched canvas
Size 30x40 inches

This is a large painting done in the studio. I did a smaller 8x10 inch field study earlier and posted on the blog last week. I love the drama created by the dark shadows on the foreground with the larger mountains in the back. I create larger paintings from the field studies and this is an example of the outcome. I hope you love it as much as I do.

This time of year the afternoon storms from Eastern Colorado to Indiana can really take eye popping command of the skies. I have tried to capture the few minutes before the storm rolls in with high winds and rain. Western clouds can be awesome.

White Shadow #807
Oil on linen on quarter inch Baltic birch
Size 6x8 inches

The painting was completed today and is too wet to ship. I have used a heavy application of oil paints to add texture. As you can probably see the paint strokes are individual and deliberate. I am going on a one month painting trip to the Canadian Rockies and will be able to ship on my return, August 28th.

We have a Tuesday evening painting group and every other week we have a costume model. This model is exceptional and looked like a person from central Asia. We had two and a half hours to paint her and this is the result. I knew with the little time he had with the model I needed to use clean brief strokes of clean colored paint. I like the outcome and hope you do too.

8-3-09 Rawah Lake Wyomintg Wilderness Area #803

Rawah Lake Wyoming Wilderness #803
Oil on Stretched canvas
Size 18x24 inches unframed

This is the first of the larger studio paintings that I have completed from the recent llama walk we took in July. The Rawah is a wilderness area in northern Colorado. I have previously boogged the smaller paintings that I completed plein air. This painting was compiled from the smaller paintings. The Rawah is a wonderful place to go but hell to get to. We walked in eight miles up hill with the llamas to get to this area. Well worth it. This month I will be taking a four week tour of the West which I will document on the blog, stay tuned. The tour starts next week.
